db2ckmig failure

I am trying to run db2ckmig on my new db2 v8 ESE instance on AIX 5.2.
My previous db2 version was V7.1.

when I issue the db2ckmig for the db, I get the following error.

% db2ckmig sample -l /tmp/db2ckmig.log

db2ckmig was unsuccessful. Please look at logfile for more details.

% cat /tmp/db2ckmig.log

Version of DB2CKMIG being run: VERSION 8.

% db2 connect to sample
SQL5035N The database requires migration to the current release.

How would I find the cause of the error from db2ckmig? It just says
Database cannot be connected.

Note: The same command was successful earlier and I started the
database migration. But the DB migration was hung and had to cancell
it. Now, before issuing the db migration, I thought of issuing the
db2ckmig again and got the above error. I would like to know what
causes the error on db2ckmig? would it be the failed "migrate db"?.
truss, is not showing much info either.

Thanks.

You're supposed to run db2ckmig _before_ you migrate the instance,
so you can fix errors first.

Thanks Ian for your response.

As I mentioned earlier, I did the ckmig before starting the migration.
Then when I did the migration, the process was hung and had to
terminate/kill. Now, if I restart the migration it may be ok, but I am
not sure, as the migration process may again run db2ckmig. So, I
thought of doing the db2ckmig again ust to validate whether the db is
in migratable state.

Thanks,

You have to run db2ckmig before you migrate your "instance" Seems like
you already have migrated your instance. Furthermore I "think"
db2imigr for instance
migration runs db2ckmig as well. So if you have migrated your instance
with db2imigr, then you don't have to run db2ckmig anymore.

For clarity, database migration command "db2 migrate db sample" does not run
db2ckmig.
