Best way to check total within row

I need to validate (sanity check) the total of a group of values. I
currently have the following statement:

ALTER TABLE flushes
ADD CONSTRAINT total CHECK(
(coalesce(unfert,0) +
coalesce(degen,0) +
coalesce(discard,0) +
coalesce(transfer,0) +
coalesce(frozen,0) +
coalesce(split,0) ) BETWEEN 0 AND 30
);

Is this the best way to do this, or should declare the variables
involved 'NOT NULL DEFAULT 0' or ...
