SQL1072C Red Hat Linux 8, DB2 7.2

Hi all.

Here's the problem.

Created one instance db2inst1, started the database manager, and
created a database (XDTGOM). Everything works perfect. Stopped the
database manager for this instance.

Created new instance db2ix01, started the database manager and created
another database (XGPS), and again. everything works perfect.

I can start the database manager in both the instances without
problems, but I can not connect to the two databases at the same time.
When I try to connect to the second database (wich of the databases I
connect to first or second does not matter), I get the following
message :

***************

SQL1072C The database manager resources are in an inconsistent state.
The database manager may have been incorrectly terminated, or another
application may be using system resources in a way which conflicts
with the way the database manager uses system resources. System
resource cleanup may be required.

***************

The usual problem seems to be i-node conflict of the sqllib catalog
for the two instances. I do not think this is the problem here, as I
can start the two instances at the same time with no problem. Also ls
-id shows different inode number for the two sqllib catalogs. (I do
not have multiple filesystems)

It seems to be the two databases that fight for the same resources.
All suggestions to solutions I have read so far seems to address the
problem of not managing to start the database manager in two instances
at the same time. This is not an issue here. It is connecting to the
databases that triggers the conflict.

Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers

How are you trying to connect? From an application (what app, language,
etc), from the command line, etc. Need more information about what
exactly you're trying to do, and how you're trying to do it.

Hi Ian

Thanks for reply.

Ok, I should have written more detailed about the connecting ...

Anyway, here goes :
I log in as db2inst1 and db2xi01 on the linux machine amd try to
connect to the databases using the "db2 connect to ....." command line
utility.

Also I have another Linux box with Tomcat 5.x installed, and, of
course, db2 7.2 client software installed. I also tried to connect
from this box using the "db2 connect to ...." and failed.

Using JDBC from servlets I get the same problem.

Hope this can lead to some more insight.

Cheers

Hi All.

Today the DB2 showed a much gentler side when I fussed around trying
to work things out.

This error message appeared :

SQL10003C There are not enough system resources to process the
request. The request cannot be processed.
Explanation: The database manager could not process the request due to
insufficient system resources. The resources that can cause this error
include:

The amount of memory in the system
The number of message queue identifiers available in the system.
User Response: Stop the application. Possible solutions include:

Remove background processes.
Terminate other applications using the above resources.
If you are using Remote Data Services, increase the Remote Data
Services heap size (rsheapsz) in the server and client configuration
because at least one block is used per application.
NOTE: This is applicable only for releases of DB2 prior to Version 2.

Decrease the values of the configuration parameters that define
allocation of memory, including udf_mem_sz if UDFs are involved in the
failing statement.
sqlcode: -10003

sqlstate: 57011
Now, this got me pointed in the right direction, and very soon I
dscovered that the parameters for message queue identifiers was way to
small (16)

Adding the following lines in the /etc/sysctl.conf :

# Sets maximum number of message queues to 128
# Set this to 1024 or higher on production systems
kernel.msgmni = 128

and rebooting the system was all it took.

Cheers
Nils
