HELP! Connection does SOMETIMES not work on new installed Win2K Computers!

Hello Out there!

I have a DB2 V7.2 Database (Fix11) on Win 2000 Professional. It was before a
NT 4 based Domain -
now it is a Win 2000 Domain. The database server is a domain member. Now
sometimes Win 2000 Clients
can't connect to the database. They connect over TCP/IP. The db2log says
that the function getHostByName
failed. It seems to be only on new installed win 2000 Workstations. Already
installed WS have NOT this problem.

What can I do? Please Help! I now configure the clients to connect over
named pipes. Can this help?

Thank you all,
Frank

I have found a difference to alle other computers. If I add a database with
the client configurator there is a page LDAP on all other
computers (also Win 2000 Prof). this page does not exist! What is this?

This is a DNS problem. The clients can't resolve the hostname for your DB2
server.

Talk to your Windows Admins to find out what the DNS issue is with these
hosts (Win 2000 active directory uses DNS).

Uninstall, then reinstall. You probably decided to omit the LDAP support on
your original installation.

Hello Mark,

what should I reinstall? The client or the server? Reinstalling the client
does not change anything.
Of course I omit installing LDAP support on the server because there was no
LDAP at this time available...
But why should it not work anymore and why the connect fails only once a
day?

Greetings,
Frank

Hello Ian,

hm, I can ping the server without problem and nslookup does also work. And
by the way:
I am the Administrator. And why the connect fails only once a day?

It seems to me that you've answered your own question - reinstall the server
(where you omitted LDAP the first time).

At this stage, I cannot answer your final question ("why does it only fail
once a day, rather than all the time?") - you've gitten too little
information as to why your DNS lookup is failing. Does your server have a
fixed IP address or does it use DHCP? What about the clients? Does your DHCP
server include the DNS record(s), or are they hard configured into (some of)
the client(s)?

Hello Mark,

hm, if I set the db2 variable DB2_ENABLE_LDAP to NO all is working again on
these clients...
Seems to me, as there is a bug, if LDAP on the server is not installed but
on the clients?

My infrastructure is very simple. All IP adresses are fixed with no DHCP
Server. Nslookup
and ping are working from the client to the db2server. There is also no
problem with group policies,
so I think DNS is working...

Cheers,
Frank

Oh no, just discovered that DB2_ENABLE_LDAP=NO does also not work.
I'm trying now NAMED PIPES again. If this also will not work - I must
reinstall the server.

Also try DB2LDAPCACHE=NO on the client machine (default is YES).

If LDAP is not enabled on the server, it will not be possible to catalogue
the server's database in the AD (I assume you're using AD for your LDAP,
otherwise there is additional configuration work to do). Hence client side
LDAP won't do anything.

Also, check your node and database directories. For LDAP you want to ensure
you have NO (overriding) entries in local directories - drop them to go the
LDAP route.

Frank,

Are you actually trying to use LDAP in your environment? Or are you just
getting an error that mentions LDAP? (I ask, because I've seen LDAP errors
before, in relation to DNS issues, and you indicated you had errors
relating to getHostByName()).
Can you post the actual error message that you see, or the snippet from the
db2diag.log?

Hi Ian,

of course I can post:

In the db2 log there are following error codes:
2004-04-27-13.50.13.082000 Instance:DB2 Node:000
PID:1480(CRM.exe) TID:812 Appid:
common_communication sqlcctcpconnr Probe:42
DIA3207E Der TCP/IP-Aufruf "gethostbyname" gab h_errno="11001" zurück.

Ping and nslookup does work. If I reconfig the client to connect over named
pipes all is working again.
This error only shows up once a day (for 10 minutes? If the client is
restarted (the pc) it is connecting again)

I will try V7.2 Fix 12. In the apar is written there is something changed
with GetHostByName
