transaction logs mirroring

Hi All

I was just wundering is there any way of mirroring our active logs
just in case of disk failures.wil db2 do it automatically for us maybe
through some inititalisation parameter.

The ability to do mirror logging depends on the release level, but I don't
remember when it was introduced. Maybe someone else can tell us.

I believe 7.2, with DB2 appending a "2" onto the end of the logpath. V8
allows one to customize, if I'm not mistaken.

AFAIK it was introduced with DB2 7.2 (i.e. 7.1, Fixpak 3).
In 7.2 log mirroring can be configured thru the registry
variable DB2_NEWLOGPATH2. However it was some kind of inflexible
because the mirror path could not be set explicitly, the character
'2' was appended to the the value of LOGPATH to build the
mirror logpath name.

In 8.1x DB2_NEWLOGPATH2 has been replaced by the MIRRORLOGPATH
db config parameter, which could be set to a full pathname.

I posted a similar thread after my shop experienced a data loss. The feedback I
got then was V7 FP11 or as advised by our own certified guru V8.

I was taken aback by how primitive UDB was in this respect. After all, it is a
fairly fundamental requirement. Oracle has provided dual logging since I first
got my hands on it back in 1998 (and probably before then).

mirroring (at the disk controller level or at the OS level) as well as
RAID-5, have been available for a long time, which basically provides a
similar function.

(someone accidentally removing the log files).

Not really. Hardware mirroring protects against a disk failing; dual
logging helps can do this as well, but also protects against user error
(someone accidentally removing the log files).

I said it was similar, not exactly the same. Really.

Log mirroring was introduced on DB2 for Windows/UNIX/Linux in 2001
(v7.1, Fixpak 3). DB2 has supported RAID since v1 (1993).

Hi All

Thanks for answering my question.I am on Db2 UDB8.0 though i am just
learning.I got curious as the certifications books i am reading never
talked aboiut mirroring the active logs.Thats what got me curious in
the first place.
