SQL30020N return code 1245 when accessing db2 VM db via .asp

Hi we are writing an applicatiion which accesses a db2 for vm 7.2
database from a ado connection in a .asp script which runs on a IIS
server.
We receive the error

SQLGetDiagRec( pszSqlState="40003", pfNativeError=-30020,
pszErrorMsg="[IBM][CLI Driver][SQLDS/VM] SQL30020N Execution failed
because of a Distributed Protocol Error that will affect the
successful execution of subsequent commands and SQL statements:
Reason Code "1245". SQLSTATE=58009

Does anyone know what this means?
The client is running db2 V6.1 and connecting via a db2 gateway. I
suspect that there's a problem with the driver (although it seems to
work ok with a vbscript).

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Lyn
