Does anyone use database modeling software?

Where you are allowed to view cross platform databases in one
application. Are they useful?

What is a cross-platform database? What do you mean by this?

Though I'm not *him* I guess he means distributed databases.

Hello Grace,

You can try ERWIN by CA and ER-Studio by embarcadero. Both products
support multiple database (like Oracle, DB2, SQL-Server, etc).

ERWIN has more options, but more expensive as well. ER-Studio is a good
tool. Both tools can convert local Entity-Relationship diagrams (models) to
physical schemas for required database type and can reverse-engineer
physical schema to logical ERD as well.

Are you looking for something like Visio that allows you to model
non-existent databases, generate .sql statements, or otherwise assist
in the creation of databases? (Visio may not be the best tool for
distributed database modelling, but it's the first thing that comes to
mind.)

Alternatively, are you looking for a tool that allows you to link in
heterogenous and/or distributed database tables and treat them as one,
homogenous data store. For example, an end user app could join a DB2
Customer table and an Ingres Customers table--each with differing data
types and column names--and query them.

When I looked at embarcadero er-studio, it did not support relationships
between 3 or more entities. Since I consider this a mandatory requirement,
I have not considered it a usable tool. Have they upgraded this aspect of
the tool?

As an aside, I also don't like the way Embarcadero markets their products.
if you buy one, they send you a CD with the entire suite. When I installed
one of their products, I, unknowingly, installed a tool that was not part of
the subset of the suite my employer had purchased, and when I did the
process to request a key to use the part that was purchased for more than
30 days, it also generated a request for the tool that wasn't purchased,
which led to one of their rabid dog marketing folks doing cold calls to me
to try to convince me to buy it. When the person would not take no for an
answer, I eventually said something like, "Look, this product is worthless,
and I'm not interested." This led to the person phoning my boss to say I
was being uncooperative and tactless or some such. So I personally won't
have anything to do with Embarcardero or their tools if I have any say in
the matter, but this is a different issue from whether one of their products
might meet your needs.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Grace,

please feel free to try our CASE Studio 2 - database design tool. It
allows you to reverse engineer already existing databases (more than
20) and generate very detailed SQL scripts or HTML/RTF reports.
