Larry,
I didn't get any error messages during the install. The first thing I get
when trying to 'connect' is a window (with 'db2bp.exe - Entry Point not
found' header and the error message as listed below (no error message no).
When I OK that (only option), I get
SQL8002N Connect processing failed; a valid product license was not found.
SQLSTATE=42968
This is exactly the same message I was getting when trying to connect to an
AS/400 before installing DB2 connect.
Wrt versions, I downloaded db2 connect from an IBM web site - but am having
some difficulty now finding where I got it from (part of the PWD site I
think). Can I tell somehow what version I have ?

Sounds like some part of the install didn't complete successfully. Post
error msg #.
Also, is it possible that the A/D client is at fp4, but DB2 Connect is
not?

reinstalled DB2 Application development client (again v8.1 FP4). When
trying to use this to connect via CLI to an AS/400 (which is set up correctly
according to the 'DB2 Version 8 Connectivity Cheat sheet' by Raul F
Chong) I get an error message from db2licm.exe telling me that 'The procedure
entry point sqlofgets could not be located in the dynamic link library
DB2SYS.dll'.
Does anyone know what this means - or how to fix it please ?
