DB2_SCATTERED_IO vs DB2BPVARS (v8 fp4)

Anybody can tell me if there is a difference between windows and linux
scatter/gather io's?

Anybody can describe the linux scatter principle? (os or db2 sorts block
numbers before sending to the io adapter?)

Why invent a new db2set variable DB2_SCATTERED_IO

since DB2BPVARS already logically took care of those elements.
