configure parameter

I am not sure this is the right way to do. I have several database
under one instance. So if I change one database configuration
parameter, I have to stop and restart the instance in order to take
effect the update and this will affect other database under use. Is
this the way DB2 design? Thanks

If you change a "database" configuration parameter, it affects "only" that database. All you have to do is ensure that all connections are off that database and no activation is present (assuming V7.2). If you are at V8.1 then many of the database configuration parameters are able to be changed online and immediately without restarting the database.

Now if you are changing an "instance" configuration parameter (DBM) in V7.2 you will need to restart the instance. For V8.1 there may be some DBM configuration parameters which can be changed online. See the Admin Guide for details on that.

hello ,

i am using db2 v8.1 on windows , i have tried to change the database
configuration parameter, but they are not updated right away. instead
it states that it must wait after instance restart. if as you said,
how can i ensure all the connections are off? use force application
all? so after that , what should i do, just restart the database by
control center? i have been do instance restart all the time and never
do as you said, can you explain more detail? thank you

You could use quiesce database. From the v8 Command Ref manual:

"After administrative tasks are complete, use the UNQUIESCE command to
activate the instance and database and allow other users to connect to
the database but avoid having to shut down and perform another database
start."
