Steps to become and independent developer / contractor

I've been working for companies for the last 10 years and would like to now embark on the journey of an independent developer.

I don't know where to start.
I live in the US.
  • Where do i find work? How should I advertise my services?
  • What tools do i use to manage clients and work?
  • How much work should I take on?
  • How much should I charge for my services?
  • How do i deal with payments?
  • Are there software based solutions for independent developer accounting?

You probably heard of "Supply and Demand."

Start with DEMAND.

SUPPLY to that demand.

You will probably have competition.

Becoming an independent programmer or contractor is very hard at first, as you will require to build your customer base, which needs frequent work done. As per your experience, I hope you know how to make and treat customers, their demand, etc. A good starting point for independent work will be some basic freelancing work as your client can even sign you up for further project work, which could give you enough work to get yourself started.
