Two hard drives with diffrent connections.

13
Hi,

I wanted to use an old hard drive I have on my new PC. The new PC has all SATA connections with the HDD and CD drive. The old Hard Drive has the old cable (ribbon). I have checked my mother board for a free slot of that kind of connection and there is. The only thing is will there be conflict between the two different connection types of the hard drives. Both of the HDD have XP on them.

Thanks in advance

Do you have data on one that you want to save?

You can set one drive to be a 'slave' - or secondary drive through the hardware configuration. It's a set of pins right next to the IDE plug. There should be a diagram on the HDD itself, or one able to be found if you Google search the hard drive manufacturer (Seagate, Western Digital, etc...), the size, and 'set slave'

Then just move the jumper in the right spot and plug it in. You may need to reformat the drive - it's been a while since I've done much Windows stuff.
