How do consultants that are independent get paid?

I have been a developer for various software companies in the NY area. I would like to go the independent route and manage my own clients and hours.

I am looking for advice on how to make the transition from anyone who has done it or works independently right now.

What are the requirements needed to be an independent software developer?
What are tools and services I should use?
How should I market myself and get my first initial clients?

Some simple steps that have worked for me.
  • Setup a website
  • Use a professional e-mail addressl
  • Create a linkedin profile
  • Create a twitter profile
  • Engage on twitter, linkedin and online communities like bytes.com.
  • Reach out to other small shops and companies to see if you can help with any client work they have. This is great for referral work later on.
  • Be patient
  • Get a good accountant to help you with tax laws and financial planning.
  • Be an active learner. Your clients needs will change over time so it's good to stay ahead of the curve.

I hope this help. Good luck in your journey.
