Tips for beginners

I'm new to programming, and I'm looking forward to how much time I'll have to spend on this. So I thought I'd ask you, where do I start? Maybe a book or something?

If you can try to play with the code. It's a great way to learn.
Also to get your skill level up, you can try coding by hand on notebooks or white boards (I know it's time consuming).
