That depends on the length of the string and the encoding used.

For example, ASCII encoding uses one byte per character. In ASCII, the number of characters in the string is also its size in bytes.

There are 8 bits in a byte.

You should also be aware that in C style strings, they are terminated by a \0 character.

But most computers worked with 8 bits to make a byte when this ASCII-table was invented....
