mp3 file to play

Hi,
Please somebody help me. I want to write a program which will play mp3 file. I understand the mp3 file format(wiki) and i am using libmad to decode mp3 file. i can get the layer, channels, bit rate, simple rate after parsing the header of the file. i don't know how to configure /dev/dsp file so that it will play the file. i am using Ubuntu 10.04 OS. is there any other character special file are there for playing files? Please help me. Thanks in advance.
