Certain Standard C Library functions are notorious producing programs susceptible to a buffer-overflow attackThe article hype261 pointed to mentions this, but I wanted to emphasize the C coding issues: don't ever use gets, there are few if any situations where strcpy should be used, and don't use the scanf functions unless your format string protects against buffer overflow.
