  1. Get an inclinometer and a tape measure.
    Stand a distance away from the tree, measure that distance.
  2. Using the inclinometer to measure the angle from the ground to the top of the tree (alternatively and more easily measure the angle at you eye level and adjust the final answer by your eye level).
  3. A bit of simple trigonometry using the measure angle and distance will produce the height of the tree (use the tangent).

There are many ways to measure the height of something (take a look at the barometer problem). What are the constraints on your solution-space?

The easiest way:

1) measure the tree's shadow.
2) measure your shadow.


Now if you only knew how tall you are, then the tree height must be in the same ratio as the shadows multiplied by your height.

Of course, you could always cut the tree down and...
