Actually, no; they're providing a significant bit of information, in
that the clueful members of the community here are signalling to others
that they're not bothering to read any more of your posts.
Oh, fair enough. I'd overlooked that explanation. I see that what you've
described is basically a form of interprocess communication in a multi-threaded
Usenet environment. Since some of the people here are apparently on the ANSI
committee, this could spell good things for the C language. I encourage them
to continue.

FWIW, I'd like to signal to everyone here that I've stopped reading
J. K. Rowling.
