Write programs.

Start writing. It's impossible to learn to, say, play a piano only by
reading how to do it.

Learn about data structures and STL. Learn different algorithms,
APIs, and join an open source project.

Define "useful" in this context. What kind of programs are you wanting

Have you heard about SourceForge.net or savannah.gnu.org? There are
many others open source sites, just search for open source projects if
you are interested.
