If statement question

I have two times the program is going to look at in a file:

11:30 a (or A)
and 1:15 p (or P)

and it could be any other time in the file.

I have two variables, timeperiod1 and timeperiod2 each to hold the character at the end of the time. Im trying to think of a way that I can tell my program to look at the characters and see if they are valid time periods. I want it so timeperiod1 has to equal 'a' 'A' 'p' or 'P' or else it will return a message saying "not valid".

But I can't think of way to do a if statement that will do this.

So timeperiod1 and timeperiod2 are both char variables, right? And you want to see if they are equal to 'a', 'A', 'p', or 'P'. That is,

if timeperiod1 is 'a' OR timeperiod1 is 'A' OR timeperiod1 is 'p' OR timeperiod1 is 'P'
valid.
else
not valid.

And repeat for timeperiod2.
