Buy "The C Programming Language", by Kernighan & Ritchie. Normally
known as K&R2 (2nd edition). For C++ look for the originator,
Strousup, or ask on c.l.c++.

Absolutely. I taught myself all of my first-year programming from
this book. I seem to remember getting my copy of Amazon second hand
for around £15 (~$30). Either go get yourself a copy (you won't
regret it) or rent it from a library.

If you like it I'd also recommend the UNIX Programming Environment by
Kernighan and Pike (I think), its hideously out of date in places but
still really useful and you'll be a better programmer (in C, or any
other language) for reading it.

That is not a tutorial for starting programming - as it self declares
in its preface.

However, when you are an experienced programmer in any else
programming lasnguage then it is recommended to study it.

Good try Mr. Bond, but you're no Stroustrup :-)

K&R is still my favorite for C.

To quote Richard Heathfield: "Finding tutorials is easy. Finding good
tutorials is harder" and "For C++ tutorials, ask in the comp.lang.c++
newsgroup", but you may have better luck in comp.lang.c++.moderated
(less noise and fewer would-be experts).

There is no perfect tutorial for everybody, so you may want to spend a
paragraph or so describing your background and perceived need.
