operator overloading

I'm trying to overload [ ] operator to do the following

Table telephone
telephone["Joe"] = "xxx xxx xxxx"
telephone["Jack"] = "xxx xxx xxxx"

I have created 2 classes

Class Name {

char * str

......

}

Class Table {

Name *p

......

Name& Operator [] {const Name *)
{
return p[xxxx] // the right index

need code to return the right value
}

I can use Map<string,string> but I want to know how map works

If you are using map, then you can use the [] operator itself to get the value.
you can access the value like the way u have mentioned in the overloaded function.
The only problem with using [] operator for searching is even if the index is not found it will return a empty string.

My vote goes for map, too. Map is efficient when storing or retrieving large numbers of distinct entries. For retrieving a single value, map is a lot faster than if you try to do it yourself.
