'system' handle

50
I'm developing a DLL used by all applications. The DLL will use ODBC to query database (Excel). So every time user starts an application, the DLL will do SQLDriverConnect to get a handle. I just wonder if can create a 'system' handle when Windows starts, which can be shared by all applications. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I suppose you could write a service for this. Provided, of course, that all of your applications have proper security credentials and do not violate licensing rules for connectivity.

I expect you will need to do a connect for each application.

But I don't really know here. I am just thinking out loud.

Using Windows Service could be a solution, but I feel a little bit over-complex if you see: applications -> DLL -> Service -> Database (Excel).
Is it possible to create the database connection handle by one application, and assign it to 'some kind of system or global environment variable', which can be shared and used by other applications, even after the original application exits? Thanks!
