I'm trying to define a two-dimensional array from an input provided by a text file. The idea was to make this array dynamic and could be defined in size at anytime while reading the input file. I was using the command like this:

int * array; // To define the array in the beginning of the code

then it would gain a variable 'n' from the input file
then try to define the array as:

array = new int[n][2];

thus creating an 'n' by 2 matrix

any help would be great or any other ideas on how to define a two-dimensional dynamic array. Thanks

C arrays are static data structure which are stored in the data segment of a rilocatable file;unfortunately the data segment is not allowed to dynamically change at runtime;so it is not possible to change array dimension at run-time.
Please take a look at some other techniques to get heap memory;for example,a nice malloc()!

right now I'm writing in C++, does that make a difference?

Yes it changes a lot.
In C++ it is possible to have dynamic arrays using the vector class

Yeah, you can use a vector<vector<int> >. The space is required, otherwise the compiler interprets it as the >> operator. This allows for mxn matrices, or unevenly sized entries.
