Canceling a 'Blocking' for Windows Sockets 2

I use Winsock2 (WS2_32.DLL) and i want to canceling the 'select()' blocking, in Windows Sockets 1.1 it was possible using the WSACancelBlockingCall(), but it removed for Winsock2 so how can cancel this blocking now?

If you read the MSDN entry on WSACancelBlockingCall() then it basically says that you should put you socket comms into another thread to allow other work to continue while the communication happens.

However you also have the option with select of specifying a timeout for it to return after.
