Can anyone tell me about available encoding methods and which method among them are easy to study from scratch?

Hi; encoding for what? Compression? or unicode encodings? Here are a few
buzz words you can google for:

compression LZW, Huffman, run length, sliding window, Shannon Fano;
unicode: UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32

Note that there are many other encoding methods that serve entirely different purposes.

Hi,
I am looking for C/C++ data encoding method before transmission and it will be better if including compression.
