realloc error in dynamic array of char*

hi!
i got this error:
*** glibc detected *** realloc(): invalid size: 0x0804b888 ***

while executing the following script:

void add(char* string) {
     if(list_rear==0)
     {
          list = (char**)malloc(1);
     }
     else
     {
          char** newlist;
          newlist = realloc(list, (sizeof(*list) * (list_rear+1)));
          if (! newlist)
          {
               free(list);
               //perform error handling
               printf("Error while adding: %s\n",string);
               return;
          }
          list = newlist;
     }
     list[list_rear] = malloc(sizeof(char)*(strlen(string)+1));
     list[list_rear] = strcpy(list[list_rear],string);
     list_rear++;
}

i have little experience in C, so any help will be thanked.

I think you meant

list = (char**)malloc(sizeof(char*));

However I don't know why do you get this error message.

Are you performing other operations than add() on your list?

Is gcc your compiler?
