Help receiving input from port

can any one give me an idea as how to get input from the port of pc using c++ or c and do actions based on the status of the signal given??
any useful links are welcome......

what operating system? (and possibly what version?) what port? serial? parallel?
usb? ethernet? audio? blue tooth?

Ports are also related to sockets. Is this what you are thinking?
