structure size

i have a question

strcut s
{
char c;
};

what is the size of structure?(i am getting 1 Byte)
why not 4 Bytes?(3 extra Bytes because of padding + 1 byte)

The reason you get padding at the end of a structure is some that when you allocate an array of them the 2nd, 3rd etc structures in the array are positioned on the correct byte alignment in memory for the data types they contain.

When you structure only consists of char and char arrays then it can appear at any location in memory, not alignment is required and therefore no padding is required as the 2nd, 3rd structures in an array of them would be aligned correctly.
