need help to use Com ports in windows forms c++

hi, can anybody help me with this i am trying to access by a com port to a machine; in the manual of this machine said that all the control from the host to the machine are ASCII, but i don understand really how this ports works, i don't know what happen when i send a command and how this machine returned the values of its actual configuration
