recognition of a serial device

P: 25
Hi friends,

I have written a VC++ application that connects with a serial device via a COM port and I specify the port number(thru which the system has to connect) in an INI file or in an edit box. Now I want my application to recognise itself (rather than me giving the number), as to which port my serial device is connected. Is it possible to do this?

thanks in advance

You can get a list of every connected device or iterate through the porst you know to be available (of course I can't find the link that kept coming up when I was looking for somwething else....I will post it if I come accross it again - suffice to say, I found it one day by googling {for USB-related material I think}).

Of course if you wanted it to be found as soon as it were plugged in, you may need to use threaded programming to continuously look for a device.

I'm also not sure whether the method I can't find will tell you if a device is present, or whether it has associated a driver to it.....
