He probably need switch to switch possible values of discriminant.

d=b*b-4ac,but I agree with you.It would be more simple to use if-else,because possible values are:

1.d>0
2.d=0
3.d<0

Yep, and I'd also like to suggest to the OP to read this for values
of b^2 much larger than 4.a.c. for a numerical much more accurate result than
the textbook solution.
