Good books on advanced programming

Can anyone please suggest any good books that teach how people to do advance programming. For example - teaches how to construct and program something Efficiently, more detail into stl's and other algorithms, etc. any suggestions which books to read up?

I'd say study "The C++ Programming Language" by Bjarne Stroustrup;
cover to cover that is ;-)

im also looking for good books that would be very useful for a student thats learning computer games programming

I don't know if they have published a good book on video game programming. Mostly you'll be looking at graphics, speed and memory management, so pay specific attention, or go back and re-read those parts.

About computer graphics; that reminds me of my old Foley and Van Dam book; it's a
nice introduction and mathematical foundation for the entire game business.

There is a very advanced series called "The art of Computer Programming". You'll need a math background, but it teaches all kinds of math integration and university level techniques.

Also, the Thompson publisher has some good books on game programming, especially directX and openGL. Check their website and cross reference it with amazon.com and books.google.com
