the data in that file. It doesn't help that ".dat" is one of several
well-used "we're too lazy to make up a file extension" extensions used
by many different programs.

If you mean the video file by DAT file you need to use video codecs
for accesssing information that file

FILE *data = fopen ("input.dat", "rb");

though it's certainly possible for a ".dat" file to contain text data.
