to read 8 bit grascale image using C

Hi everyone,
Taking .tiff file as source file I would like to perform thresholding on it.I would like to know how to read an image using C/C++.

Well what is psuedo code so far? Post that and as a comunity we can work to create a clear idea in your head. What is your theory as to achieve this, what functions you want to use. Are you going to use structs? As you can see the questions could go on, what I am getting at is think and then post back.
