Help in Parallel Port programming

Hello I need help in preparing a code on Visul C++ involving a parallel port. I'm basically try to count the number of pulses recieved by my device via the parallel port and display it on the screen. Could someone guide me on how I can get about it. I'm not familiar with C++ and would really appreciate the help
