bmp file reading

hi
i wanna load a bmp file from turbo c++ coding.i tried it out as,
video memory pointer with 0xa0000000l as value.
then
i read each bit using fgetc(fptr) and put it into a pointer variable
of the structure.when i cout the bits i get a blank space only.
i then clear video mem pointer to black background and memcpy the
value in pointer variable of struct to video mem pointer.but the prg
hangs up wen i clear the video mem pointer. i use the screen of size
320 by 200.
thanks
