Decimal Exponent algorithm?

Hi everyone, I've been trying to figure out an algorithm for raising a number to a decimal power. IE: 5^.473636787 I know there is pow() from cmath and all, but I really want to figure this thing out. I realize I can turn it into a rational power and use an nth root algorithm, but that only works for numbers that can be simplified way down. I've googled this thing to hell and can't find any sort of algorithm that would work within the limits of a double variable. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
