So are you looking for common interview questions? Usually these have to do with your problem solving ability. They want to see your ability to be presented with a problem and then solve it.

The best way to prepare for something like this is to think out loud while working on problems. If you talk through your problem then you can better describe what you are thinking and the interviewer can know what you are thinking.

You know this apparent anonymity of the internet has an exraordinary intoxicating effect on the young. Towards the end of job interviews it is common to ask "What do you think your worst qualities are?" You can reply "going onto the internet to learn interview skills". If there was one thing that I could impart to you via this limiting medium it would be this (and I am quite certain you will not believe me).

The companies that interview students on campus don't give a damn about how much c++ or any other language your have stored in your memory. They are looking for winners.

I couldn't agree more! I had an interview 6 months ago for a classic ASP position and literally told the interviewer that I hadn't done any ASP classic for quite some time > 1 year. They had 6 interviews to do and I was the first. I was called with an offer < 5 minutes after the last interview. I think when you sit down for an interview the way you conduct yourself is just as if not more important than your skill set. They already know what you can do from your resume, they want to know how you will fit in with the company. I think we should start a thread and post some questions IT persons are likely to be asked during an interview.

One last thing I've noticed, from some interviews. When you go to an interview make sure you are dressed properly. For me that is Business Professional (Suit & Tie).

... They are looking for winners.
What does this mean? Looking for winners, how can you tell if someone is a winner vs. a loser?

If you don't own suit, a nice button down collard shirt (long sleeve) and slacks and dress shoes will work too.

There you have hit the nail on the head. This is the 'science' of interviews. Personally, it usually takes me at least 10 seconds to find out one way or the other.

Winner: Willing to work hard, has little/no ego problems, able to work efficiently under pressure/with teams

Loser: Egocentric, thinks if he/she can't do it it's impossible, lazy, loner

Just my thoughts.

Surely, you are not judging a book by its cover. One of the biggest things that they teach in HR hiring seminars is to look for hidden profiles. You cannot hire a person based on if you "like" or "dislike" them, it must be done on who can do the job the best. Almost exclusively the person who can do the job the best is the person who "thinks" better then the others. That is how you can tell if you are with an experienced interviewer, it they ask you questions that allow them insight on your thought processes. You can also tell who is going to be a good employee if they can think their way through a solution better.

The thing to remember is to think "out loud" when in an interview. And above all don't say things like "I don't know" or "I give up" or "I never really thought about it".

In an interview be honest but also try to give your answers a positive light. For example an interviewer asks me "What is your biggest weakness?" and I say "I tend to be impatient at times, I see the goal in my mind and I know what it takes to get there so sometimes my vision of the future is so clear that I'm driven to succeed and it gets in the way of the present issues." See I took a negative and made it into a positive by talking about my strong vision and drive.

If any of you other guys have tips like that you should put them here.

I would like to change the name of this thread to "Job interview questions" does anyone object to that? It also might be a good idea to redirect this to one of the community forums.

Oh dear oh dear!
'..be honest but..'
I have employed more than 800 people. I interviewed many of them personally. You would have been straight out the door with an answer like the example you just gave.

Never lie in an interview. Never bullshit. Always maintain eye contact with everyone there and tell the truth. Always tell the truth. I can tell that you are about to lie before you open your mouth. It is very easy to see. Most interviewers make up their minds in less than 10 seconds after you walk through the door. The first 3 seconds decide if you are a 'no' or a 'maybe' then the very first question decides your ability to communicate i.e. 'maybe' or 'yes'. So, even though you have been reading 'the c++ bible' for 2 weeks, the first question will be something innocuous like "Did you have any problems getting here?" This is your opportunity to talk in words of more than one syllable and this will decide the outcome of your interview much more than your programming skills.

I've used answers like that to many interview questions and for every interview I've been to I was asked to return for a second interview or have been offered a position. As for people saying stuff like that in response to my questions, I respect their attitude, they recognize where their personality is lacking and are trying to improve.

True you need to be honest but it doesn't hurt to spin an answer if you can. Those questions about your negative aspects are designed to trip you up to see if you will lie about something or if you will be honest but still complimentary about your traits.

And while it is a sad but true fact that most interviewers make up their mind on their first impressions, you can still change their mind by the end of the meeting if you are eloquent, smart, and able to communicate effectively.

True you need to be honest but ...
I had a bet with some friends back in '97 and applied for 10 completely different jobs, none of which I was qualified for. After being offered a job in the first 7 interviews I cancelled the rest, the point having been made. Know what it is they are looking for and supply it in abundance.

You did it again "...be honest but..." This is the road to ruin.

It is not a sad fact that most interviewers make up their mind on their first impressions. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is an amazing and wonderful piece of information that will get you any job you want just as soon as you understand what it means. Know exactly what they want and hit them between the eyes with it immediately. It is absolutely impossible to fail an interview. It is only possible to screw it up. So don't :)

It sounds like what you are advocating is learning what the employer wants to hear and then spoon feeding it to them, I don't know if I would quite characterize that as honesty.

Admittedly I have qualified my honesty statement because you must be able to sell yourself as a good employee, if you say nothing but bad things about yourself but then don't have a good attitude about it, people will assume that you are a drag to be around and work with. They will not want to hire you.

I disagree it, is very much a sad fact that most interviewers judge the people that are interviewing within the first few moments of meeting them. This means that they are letting their prejudice and stereotypes dictate who they hire. In those few moments they cannot tell how good of an employee you can be because they just met you. They have your resume but a resume does not tell you how witty or intelligent a person is, it doesn't show you how well they perform when given a hard task to complete under pressure. And it doesn't tell you if they are going to be a good fit to the organization.

You have my head spinning here. Giving someone exactly what they want is now dishonest. Dear oh dear!
The world is the way that it is. Deciding to call it very sad is as useful as shaving your head with sandpaper. Wrong choice. Everything is as it should be. Already perfect. It is not my place to get pissed at the world. I can only change me and I can start by being very happy, even excited, that the interview game is stacked in my favour if I am willing to be great. It is not only kids who cover their eyes and think that nobody can see them. Adults do it all the time. It doesn't work. Everyone can see everyone else in a second. We just lie about it.

Dogs bark, water is wet, rocks are hard, everyone dies, the pope is catholic, interviewers judge people on first impressions. The world is fabulous. Love it.
