atol() function will convert the string to long.....
Example code is

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1.  #include <stdlib.h>
  2.  #include <stdio.h>
  3.
  4.  int main(void)
  5.  {
  6.     long l;
  7.     char *lstr = "98765432";
  8.
  9.     l = atol(lstr);
  10.     printf("string = %s integer = %ld\n", lstr, l);
  11.     return(0);
  12.  }
