Strings to Longs and Floats

I have a question which is probably simple to answer... how do i cast a string of numbers i read as a string into a long. Please give the reply in simple terms.

atol() function will convert the string to long.....
Example code is

 #include <stdlib.h>
 #include <stdio.h>
 
 int main(void)
 {
    long l;
    char *lstr = "98765432";
 
    l = atol(lstr);
    printf("string = %s integer = %ld\n", lstr, l);
    return(0);
 }
