string and arrays

hey guys!
i would like to know if what strings are and what are the functions on arrays. . can you give me an example program? i can hardly understand the examples on the other reference. . i hope you can help me about this problem of mine. . i really want to be a programmer someday. . thanks and GOD bless!!
