Hi, Im interested in learning Visual C++, since I heard you can do a lot of things with it when you know more about it. I started learning it few years ago but dropped it and forgot 99% of what I knew.

My goal currently is to make a program that checks if an IP is open on a specific port, and check it's latency.

Ofcourse I have to do some tutorials first. Does anyone know anywhere (on the web) i can get started so I can reach my goal?

have a look at a C++ tutorial

then go on to TCP/IP clients and servers

although you are not using Java have a look at InetAddress.isReachable() method
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/net/InetAddress.html#isReachable(int)

which discusses using ICMP ECHO REQUESTs and TCP echo port 7.
