i need to program the serial port of PC in C

i have used bioscom routines of the standard C library..my system sends 5 bytes on the port. in response to it, a device attached to the com port sends 11 bytes.
The trouble is my program fails if the terminal devices' speed of response reduces or increases even slightly....i know its a long code..but sombody plz help ...

i'm using turboC.....well cud u suggest me jas the exact algo that can be coded using c.....i just dont know how to retrieve the 11 response bytes which are expected at a variable speed, without loosing them....
