Hi

I need some help with a basic program, im trying to read in a sentence from the screen, then count the number of times each letter is used and store this information in an array.

For example:

If the user typed hello world; I would like the program to count each letter so there would be 1 h so it would increment the h value in the array there would be 1 e so increment the e value in the array and there would be 2 l’s so increment the l value by 2 etc

Try breaking the problem down into smaller steps. First, you will need to ge the user input. Easy enough - just use a getline(std::cin, string variable) function call to store the input into your string variable.

Next, you will need an integer array representing the alphabet - what size will this have to be? Initialize each value in the array to 0 (you have read 0 characters, so there are 0 of each letter).

Finally, you need to loop through each character of your string. A for loop will work well for this - go from 0 to your string's length() - 1. Access each character by declaring a char variable (such as ch) and setting ch equal to stringVariable[index], or the character at position index of stringVariable.

Perform the necessary calculations to get that character down to an integer between 0 and 25 if it is a letter. If it is a letter, increment that position in your alphabet array by 1.
