about TorboC

TorboC is the designate compiler for homework in my school. I wonder if
it is too old fashioned?or there's any features in TC good for teaching?

There is latest version of TurboC(Turbo Explorer2006) released by
borland and it's free to download. I don't know how standard abiding it
is but since it came out this year, so I suppose it must be alot
standard conforming than previous version. So, better download the new
version or get GCC which is one of the most standard abiding compiler
and freely available on web.

The Turbo components seem to be only available for W2000 up. Since
I run W98 FE here they are probably useless to me. Does anyone
know if they run under Wine on Linux?

Virtually any compiler will do for homework type exercises.
When you get on to building graphical user interfaces or accessing the
internet you will want rather better tools, but you don't need them yet.

I have been successful in getting them to work partially under wine and
partially under cedega. I don't remember the specifics of it all since
it was a while ago however newer versions should work as well. I don't
remember why I ran the utilities under cedega - most likely because I
already had it installed and it seemed easier. I do know that I had to
change the windows version in the wine config file and most likely had
to supply a few dll's from a windows 2000 install.

Be careful, though. Many compilers are by default C++ or C-with-
extensions compilers, and will trick you into learning bad habits unless
you take care to call them as C compilers.

I guess the main reason for using TC is the nice GUI, albeit only in
text mode.

In the Windows world i'd consider Pelles C as a replacement. Or Open
Watcom.
