Function type

Hello all,

I am new in programming and i have a question, i create a class CLine. And from this class a function of this type can be derived for other classes. My question is

CLine* CDayDoc::AddLine(CPoint ptFrom, CPoint ptTo)

what is the meaning of CLine* ????

why not only Cline CDayDoc:: ....???

CLine * indictaes that the function returns a pointer to a CLine object, i.e. the return is by reference.

CLine would indicate that the function returns a CLine object, the return is by value and if it is used then you may end up having to copy objects (i.e. have a copy constructor and oerator= overload).
