where we should use reference and where pointer

as reference is also the const pointer so i want to know that where we should use reference and where pointer?????????

1 of the big differences is that a reference must be initialised but a pointer need not be.

Use a pointer if you can't initialise at the time the variable is created.
Use a pointer if you are going to need to do pointer arithmetic, moving the pointer with-in an array for instance, because references can't do this.
Use a pointer if you intend to allocate memory dynamically.

Otherwise use references.
