C++ is a general programming language -- it can be used to write any
program that can run on a computer. As a practical tool, it is more
suited to some application domains than others, but it's pretty good
all-around.

C++ is very good at allowing you to write efficient programs (an
important property when writing networking code), because you don't
have to pay for what you don't use, have direct memory access for
low-level manipulation, etc. Also, there are many high-quality
libraries available for C++, to do networking and so on.

C++ is generally compatible with C systems, and many soft languages are
written in C. So C++ is a very good language to escape from C++ with. You
can embed languages such as Perl, Python, or Ruby, and you can write all the
easy stuff in those languages, and the efficient and low-level stuff in C++.
