Debugger query


Does a debugger runs at the same address space of the program it's
debugging ?
Can someone briefly explain how it works.for e.g: gdb

A debugger does not have to run in the process space of the debugged
program.
In Windows OS, there is a set of APIs called "Debugging API" (check MSDN)
that might give you an idea of the whole debugging process.

A debugger does not have to run in the process space of the debugged
program.
In Windows OS, there is a set of APIs called "Debugging API" (check MSDN)
that might give you an idea of the whole debugging process.

Most user mode debuggers run in a different process address space. The
same is true for UNIX. While the UNIX debug interface has varied over
the years, it's always been a separate process. The early Bell UNIX's
used a API called ptrace() which was a function that let you poke at
the other processes address space. Berkeley came up with a virtual
fs thing called proc where you could open up the process being debugged
memory space as if it were a file.
